Dear Members of JKA Australia,

We are delighted to announce that Japan Karate Association Headquarters (JKA HQ) has formally appointed Dr Lutie van den Berg Sensei to the JKA Shihankai Committee.

This appointment follows the nomination submitted by Chief Instructor Philip Young Sensei, together with the Executive Committee of JKA Australia Incorporated, and reflects the confidence of JKA Headquarters in Dr van den Berg’s long-standing dedication, technical excellence, and service to the Japan Karate Association.

Dr van den Berg Sensei succeeds the late Nishimura Takaatsu Shihan, who faithfully represented JKA Australia on the Shihankai for many years. His appointment ensures that JKA Australia continues to be represented with integrity, experience, and deep commitment to the teachings of JKA Headquarters.

Dr van den Berg Sensei has served the JKA with distinction. His credentials include:

  • 7th Dan JKA
  • JKA A Instructor, A Examiner, and A Judge
  • Honbu‑appointed JKAA Dan Examiner with Special Rights
  • Special Rights to conduct grading examinations up to Nidan level and License D
  • National Coach of JKA Australia
  • Competitor and coach with international achievements

Dr van den Berg Sensei has trained under some of the most respected instructors in the JKA and has contributed significantly to the development, unity, and technical standard of JKA Karate in Australia.

His appointment to the Shihankai is recognition of his lifelong dedication to the JKA, his technical depth, and his commitment to upholding and advancing the standards of our organisation.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, Branch Heads, instructors, and members of JKA Australia, we extend our congratulations to Dr Lutie van den Berg Shihan on this well‑deserved appointment.
